Seaton in a lovely seaside town which can be found on the East Devon Coast. It lies between Sidmouth and Lyme Regis, nestling between Beer Head and Haven Cliff with the beautiful rural villages including Beer and Branscombe nearby. Seaton is a gateway for exploring the Jurassic Coast and the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The town appeals to holiday makers of all ages. Situated at the mouth of the River Axe, overlooking the magnificent blue waters of Lyme Bay, Seaton offers a wonderful pebble beach with safe swimming areas and a haven for yachtsmen at the idyllic harbour at Axmouth. The South West Coast Path takes you along a magical cliff walk to Lyne Regis, just 6 miles away.
Charming old cottages such as Bluebell Cottage and Sagewood Cottage can be found all around the town. Many of the houses date from Victorian times when it first became popular as a holiday destination. The town is a pleasant area to stroll around, you will find many small traditional style shops and a selection of cafés , restaurants and pubs.
It is possible to enjoy a break in Seaton without the need of your car as there are so many attractions within the town. Walking down through the main, partly pedestrianised, shopping streets lead you to the sea front. There you will find the pebble beach and a wide level pathway which follows the beach for about ½ mile. The beach extends around Seaton Bay, with cliffs rising above the beach when you leave town. The esplanade can be followed around to the picturesque Axmouth Harbour to the east.
Turning west you can reach Seaton Hole via Cliff Valley Gardens and some good views of the coast enroute. Seaton Marshes provide great places to explore, by the famous Electric Tramway or on foot, with kingfishers, herons, foxes and little egrets to name but a few.
A small museum within the town explains the history of Seaton, which dates back to the Iron Age. All of this can be put into context by following the Seaton Heritage Trail, a marked walk around the area. (Details from the Seaton tourist office.)
Whether you chose to enjoy the thrill of the gauge tram railway that follows a 3-mile riverside route, or explore the South West Coast Path both of which are within 0.3 miles of the cottages, to go further afield to the ever-popular Lyme Regis (7 miles) and Sidmouth (10 miles), a town caught in timeless charm and well-known for its popular beaches, perfect for a relaxing day with your loved ones, you will find plenty to do.
